The Regional Coordinating Committee meets quarterly to collaborate on shared programs for our African American constituents serving in the heart of major cities throughout the Pacific Union. Regional churches are multicultural yet operate within Afro-centric traditions.

Historically African American congregations are diverse yet holistically address the unique needs of the congregations and the communities through nurture, outreach, and resources. The way this is accomplished is set forth by Jesus in Matthew 25:35-36. The Committee identifies opportunities for union wide growth and development that addresses both constituents and community concerns. As we engage our community and tackle this work, we invite your participation through prayer, support and action.
A Distinct Identity
Regional Ministries Office of the Pacific Union Conference of SDA knows that our strength lies not only in the words we stand by, but most importantly through the actions of our initiatives. 
The Scope of Our Work
​The scope of the regional ministry director's work it to:
  • Serve as spiritual advisor
  • Serve as administrative liaison to the conference/union president
  • Facilitate mutual communication to constituents
  • Assist with facilitation and placement of pastors
  • Encourage personal and public evangelism
  • Provide ministry resources and technical assistance
  • Coordinate camp meetings, convocations. or training conferences
  •  Serve as liaison between advisory groups, pastors, members, etc.
  • Provide insight to churches in crises; Initiate healthy church training
  • Inspire harmonious relationships among ethnic/cultural groups
  • Encourage faithful stewardship
  • Assist in providing resources and support for West Coast Youth Conference (WCYC) and (BAYDA) and NAD Youth Conventions
  • Support outreach, evangelism and church growth ministries at all levels
The Origins of the Work
The first black Seventh-day Adventist Church was organized, November 3, 1906 in Oakland, California.  The second congregation sprung up in a home of a black couple in Los Angeles who opened their doors for a community Bible study.  Those studies led to the Furlong Track church being organized in August 1908.  As Zachariah once said, "do not despise small beginnings...”

There are now 65 churches across our six conferences with membership of 27,000. The challenges to sustain African American congregations the inner city is compounded by social mobility, cultural shifts, gentrification, diminishing resources, and mission aligned with felt needs. To address these challenges in the context of evangelism, the Regional Ministries uses the most innovative approaches available to impact the growing need of relevant ministries to connect our communities to Christ. 

Every prayer, encouraging word, time invested and resources spent builds up the members and the leaders. From greeters to pastors Regional Ministries provide opportunities to influence someone to follow Jesus from here to the kingdom—each part makes up the whole.
